Johannes à Kerckhoven (1594-1660)

The grave monument for Johan Polyander van den Kerckhoven (1594-1660) is in the north transept. He was the Lord of Heenvliet and the confidant of Prince Frederik Hendrik. He negotiated on behalf of the Prince and Amalia van Solms with the English king about the marriage treaty between Prince William II and Princess Mary Stuart. After the marriage, he became the head of Mary's royal court. He was married to Katharina Stanhope, Countess of Chesterfield.

Johannes a KerckhovenThe marble monument was made by Rombout Verhulst (1624-1698) and was commissioned by Lady Stanhope. Verhulst made other grave monuments in Katwijk and Delft. In Leiden, he created sculptures for the Waag building, the Plague house (Pesthuis) and the Zijl gate. An epitaph written by Verhulst can be found in the Hooglandse Kerk. Furthermore, he worked on the sculpture work in the city hall (later the Royal Palace) on the Dam in Amsterdam and is also the maker of the De Ruyter mausoleum in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.

There is an epitaph commemorating Kerckhoven's father near the Van Hagerbeer organ.
